[LL039] Thomas Burkhardt – Selten
8 Tracks (38:47)

Noble earths are needed to fulfil humanity’s wish for digitization and technological progress. That is indeed ironic since in order to construct a world only using digits it still needs nature’s rarest elements. Therefore it must be questioned how much the digital dream is worth in the end. I wanted to convert this question into electronic music that consists of primal elements of rhythm and sound to celebrate rudimentary things that let us feel and dance – powerful elements of the past to guide us into the future.

[LL037] LIN/LOG – Triptychon
3 Tracks (41:10)

Triptychon is a unique and colossal piece. The name derives from a painting that consists of three pieces, mostly used in religious context. The trisection of the piece is based not only on its three titles „Offenbarung“ (i.e. revelation), „Mutualismus“ (i.e. mutualism) and „Utopie“ (i.e. utopia), but on the musical side on three completely different modular synthesizers the music was performed with.

Triptychon is the most personal work so far from sound designer Thomas Burkhardt (aka LIN/LOG). The word „trip“ must be highlighted in order to fully engage with the sound concept. Thomas wrote enigmatic poems and phrases and mixed them up with abstract and very complex patches. To be exact over 150 unique patches were recorded for Triptychon.

The audience enters a world that has been taken over by algorithms. The speaker introduces in short many theoretical events, which are then described in detail only by sound. That is, because the true meanings cannot be communicated by words, but by music. Finally it must be questioned if man is truly willing to accept the future he is facing. Thomas opens a door to a world that is unheard so far, but still feels uncomfortably real – a contemporary gem.

[LL036] Thomas Burkhardt – Weiter
6 Tracks (37:38)

„Weiter“ is a love letter to music I grew up with and furthermore it is a window to our future. Humans tend to forget their past and believe that future only brings progression, knowledge and wealth. They forget about their spiritual roots and sacrifice their inner thoughts to algorithms in anticipation of redemption and peace. But truth is, all beings have to fight their inner demons for themselves. So stand up! „Es geht weiter!“

[LL035] Thomas Burkhardt – Novalis
32 Tracks (2:51:21)

Nature is repetition of cyclic events. Each event has specific boundaries that it cannot exceed immeditately, but over time. That was the starting point of my consideration to make this project.

I wanted to create a musical setup in order to play with the idea of being forced to think within inherent boundaries. Therefore I have built a modular system that is some kind of an esoteric technoid creation machine, or in other words a workstation. Being inspired from the idea of natural laws I wanted to limit the number of voices, or instruments, to a certain value as well as the number of mixing channels. Also the creation process itself was limited to boundaries I could not exceed. The modular setup was configured in a way that all parameters interact with each other and react to each current setting. With this in mind the sound creation process functions as an organic and arbitrary entity. So with this setup I was able to play live and improvise pieces very quickly. Every recording was made only once leaving all quirks as they are to keep each track stand out from today’s conformist and accurate music production industry. The goal was to achieve a method of creating spontaneous musical events right from a specific mood of a moment, which I think is how nature itself works.

Enjoy the journey and leave a message where it brought you.

3 Tracks (15:29)

The skyline is falling. What we have dreamt of collapsed and leaves us speechless.
There is no unity. There is no equality.

“Kollaps” contains three tracks of analog modular electronic music and was performed and recorded with love and passion.

[LL032] LIN/LOG – Eldorado
16 Tracks (43:34)

Trying to survive the daily madness you find yourself struggling to smile. Looking at the mass feels so strange. Sometimes you just want to break free from all these rules, these rituals. But you never will. The only thing you can do is accepting what is going on. If you’re lucky you might even find reasons to laugh.

All pieces were performed as one-takes with a unique modular system. They all have in common that they were created during one year that was essentially devastating for many reasons. They needed to be recorded to prevent myself from being silenced.
